Planner peace is a myth
Updated: Sep 6, 2021
So many strive for this elusive idea of planner peace and I'm here to tell you that planner peace is a myth. You may think you've achieved it, but if you're like me planner peace only exists in the moment and isn't everlasting. The notion that there is one planner, one layout, or one brand that is going to magically bring balance and peace to your life is a nice thought, but for most of us it simply doesn't work that way. Seasons change, as they say, and so do we. It's natural and completely normal that our planners change with us as well.
At the beginning of my planner journey I thought The Happy Planner was the end all, be all. (I used a classic, a classic and a mini, then ultimately just a mini for my catch-all.) Don't get me wrong they have great planners and the stickers are... *chefs kiss*, but there came a point where the planner wasn't working for me. I thought it was something I was doing wrong and I got trapped into brand loyalty (we'll talk about that in another post). The thought of changing planners was so scary because I had SO much invested in The Happy Planner and I continued using a planner that wasn't working because I was afraid of change and kept thinking about ALL that money I had spent.
The thing that lit the fire to switch up my planning system was my not making The Happy Planner Squad back in, I think it was 2018. I had spent so much time focusing on the wrong thing. My focus was on "does the Happy Planner notice me", "are these planner pics Instagram worthy", "Omg I really want to make the Squad" and I just got way too caught up in wanting to be "planner famous" to the point my planner was working against me instead of for me. In hindsight, NOT making the Squad was the BEST thing that happened to me. It made me branch out, disregard the feeling that I had to remain forever loyal to one brand, and finally try another planner. That one moment in my life opened me up to so many more possibilities.
(Side note: If your goal is to make the Happy Planner Squad, then hey, that's totally cool. I 100% support you and I wish you luck. Just know that your worth as a person and in the planner community isn't determined by whether or not you're one of the 20 people on that Squad. Free product isn't always what it's cracked up to be anyway.)
My next "Not Happy Planner" planner would end up being the Erin Condren Academic planner that I used as a social media planner. Why didn't I use it as my main planner? Fear of the unknown. By not using it as my main planner I could take baby steps, test the waters, and see if it was something I could work with. I LOVED the EC Academic planner so much (that paper, y'all) that I would eventually get an EC Hourly. The EC hourly was perfection for what I wanted in a planner at the time and I used it up until "plannergeddon" - if you know, you know. Not much more I need to say about that, but suffice it to say I'm now in rings.
Ring agendas are my jam now and I couldn't imagine straying. However, I still get a tug every now and then to switch up my planners when things aren't feeling just right. So I switch out my inserts to something fresh and more functional. When my Plum Paper A5 planner wasn't working for social media I switched to A5 rings with a different layout. I know not everyone has the ability to jump from planner to planner on a whim and that's ok. Even minor adjustments to your planner can keep it fresh. The point of all this is to say that you shouldn't get caught up in the trap of trying to find planner peace because for most people it doesn't exist. It's ok to change up your planner however you need it to be when it's not working. Your planner should be working for you, not against you. It's natural that your planning style, the things you're planning, tracking, etc will need to be adjusted. As you grow, your planner should grow along with you.
I'll be talking more about different planners, what kind of planner might be right for you, and ways to keep your planner fresh and functional in future blog posts, so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss a post!
